The new 2x4 rhythm

A new sub-genre known as “electrotango” gained popularity all over the world ten years ago. In the acme of its revival while still displaying its all-time spirit, Buenos Aires popular music places itself at the forefront of the worldwide cultural scenario

Electro-tango

Not only did such a sub-genre bring about a revolution in music, but it also had an impact in the dancing world, since youth found a new way to “loosen up” the traditional tango strict tenets.

Electro-tango stands as a balanced blend between tango and electronic music being danced in every corner of the world. House, Tecno and Trip Hop music styles have been the rhythms by choice in major European discos for over a decade. Back in 2001, there emerged this state-of-the art genre pioneering group known as Gotan Project which posed a new challenge to face in the ongoing evolution of electronic music referred to as ”tango”.

This group got more than a favorable response considering that their first record sold over one million copies worldwide. Gotan Project embodies the perfect combination of three musicians being namely French (Philippe Cohen-Solal), Swiss (Cristoph Müllen) and, naturally enough Argentinian (Eduardo Makaroff) as we are talking about tango.

Not only did such a sub-genre bring about a revolution in music, but it also had an impact in the dancing world, since youth found a new way to “loosen up” the traditional tango strict tenets. Carlos Libedinsky, the Narcotango creator, makes a big difference between past styles and such a new one: “It is danced more openly and it has come to develop further ways for a man and a woman´s energy to meet. It is more ludic.”

Tango has evolved and resorted to other styles since the sixties. Ástor Piazzolla was one of the pioneers involved in such an evolution, and back at that time, he brought about a change in tango welcoming standards. At present, such a new combination of one of the quintessential Rioplatense rhythms and the latest breakthroughs in technology brings up to date a genre, which far from dying, is livelier than ever before.
