
It is the biggest university in the country. Public, and more than 187 years old, it offers more than 100 courses of studies in 13 schools to more than 300,000 students. Its academic and scientific prestige is well known in the world.
The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) was inaugurated in 1821, only five years after the declaration of independence. Even though at the beginning it depended on the provincial government. In 1881 it became a national institution and became the biggest academic, cultural and scientific center, place of formation of professionals, circulation and production of knowledge in the country.
At the beginning of the XX century it was an elite university, but later it became massive, making its prestige grow. Important Argentinean political and intellectual characters have studied in its classrooms. Furthermore, Nobel prize winners Bernardo Houssay (1947) and César Milstein (1984) in Medicine and Luis Federico Leloir (1970) in Chemistry, , studied there.
It is the most populated center of superior education in Argentina, and also in Latin America. Every year, more than 50,000 students are registered. Thanks to the policy of superior education sustained by the state, the entrance to the UBA and all other public Universities in Argentina is free and not restricted. In other words, except in a few cases, all students who have completed secondary school can register in any of its courses of studies without paying, without entrance exams or courses and with no number limit.
Other characteristic of Argentinean public universities is the existence of freedom of lecture and lecturers competitions. This way, the autonomy of thinking and knowledge is guaranteed, also the incorporation of skilled and qualified human resources.
Nowadays, the UBA has 13 schools which offer 108 graduate courses of studies, and 314 postgraduate courses. Furthermore, it manages:
• Cultural Center Ricardo Rojas, one of the most important in the country, and producer of cultural vanguards.
• A printing house, Eudeba, pioneer in the publishing of national and international academic texts, and at the same time co-editor of the Student’s Guide, with information about all the offer in superior studies in Argentina;
• Encrucijadas magazine;
• Three middle schools, The Buenos Aires National School, the Superior School of Commerce Carlos Pellegrini and the Technical Education School of Agricultural and Agro-alimentary Production;
• A crowded Laboratory of Languages, where students can study Spanish, among many other languages;
• A group of six hospitals, for example, the Clinics hospital, which is an important education and health care center;
• 18 institutions for research, plus 22 which are coordinated together with Conicet, without including laboratories and research centers which work in each of the schools;
• A Student´s Orientation Leadership (DOE) which organizes and gives workshops and orientation courses;
• The program of distance learning UBA XXI, which allows students to attend CBC subjects using new learning technology and information;
• UBA XXII, a program, pioneer in the education world, of education in prisons. It has been working for more than twenty years, and more than 2,000 students and 100 have attended it. Courses of studies like: Psychology, Law, Economics and Sociology are taught;
• A big sport center;
• A net of 14 musems;
• Choir and orchestra;
• Radio UBA 90.5 fm
