The passion of the Argentine people for soccer doesn’t go on holidays. Every January Salta, Mendoza and Mar del Plata look their best to offer the greatest of shows and afford its spectators a perfect excuse to have a look at the country.
This sports event is especially attractive on account of the beauty of the nature that surrounds each venue and the visitor’s possibility to explore all of them with the help of what tourism has on offer.
This queer summer tournament, a competition among the principal Argentine soccer teams, took off in 1968 in the city of Mar del Plata. Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo, Rosario Central and Montevideo’s Peñarol (as a special guest) were the teams that took part in this first summer championship, a tournament that has become a classic event of Argentine soccer. Two new venues were added in 2001, the cities of Salta and Mendoza.
This sports event is especially attractive on account of the beauty of the nature that surrounds each venue and the visitor’s possibility to explore all of them with the help of what tourism has on offer. The passion of the crowds that fill the stadiums adds spice to the enterprise, no doubt.
Each venue has attractions of its own and all are equally worthy of a visit by the tourist. And as if all of this were not enough, the five-team tournament features two special games: the two legs of the so called Superderby, the most exciting match of Argentine soccer. This particular event has caught the world’s attention: in 2004 The Observer – an English newspaper – called it “one of the sport events that cannot be missed during anyone’s lifetime”.
Seven years ago soccer was added to all the aforementioned features, a very Argentine enhancement. Three very different cities that have a common excuse to invite people to visit them: to experience the sport that elicits the greatest passion in Argentina.
