The city outskirts offer several places for recreation and weekend leisure. Tigre, San Antonio de Areco, Martín García Island and San Pedro are some of the most tantalizing destinations nearby for tourism.
Tigre
Weather:
A humid-template kind of weather prevails, with an average annual record of 17ºC. The average annual rains fluctuate between 800 and 1,000mm.
How to get there:
By train: Mitre Railway, going from Retiro to Tigre. The journey takes 45 minutes. By bus: 60 bus, Tigre branch, leaves Constitución station and gets to Tigre in two hours approximately.
Coast Train (Tren de la Costa): Starting in Maipú, reaches Tigre in 30 minutes.
By car: you can take Panamericana Route up to the North Access, turning off at Tigre branch along Del Sol highway.
When to get there:
El Tigre is visited throughout the year, with walks through the Puerto de Frutos and excursions to various recesses can be made at any time. However, because in the autumn and winter temperatures are lower during summer and spring receive greater numbers of tourists.
The
Tigre district is 32km north
Buenos Aires city and, together with
San Fernando district, it has one of the most traditional touristy destinations of the country: Delta islands. Surrounded by Río de la Plata and Paraná waters, the area is made up of thousands of islands, islets and secondary rivers; it is characterized by picturesque docks and houses raised from the level ground and there you can do an endless number of activities: fishing, water sports or sailing typical boats.
A must in Tigre
Located 15 blocks from the main port, it used to be a traditional fruit and vegetables market. At present, it is an adorable shopping place, ideal to purchase cane, wood or wicker furniture; there are also shops selling plants, clothes or home stuff. The restaurants by the Luján river are another attraction, offering elaborate dishes and a wonderful panoramic view.
Several community boats depart from Tigre station by the river; this mean of transport becomes ideal for touring the Delta. Sailing Sarmiento, San Antonio and Paraná de las Palmas rivers, these crafts reach recreational places –with restaurants and hotels-, those areas for flora and fauna watching and historical spots, like Leopoldo Lugones´ house.
It is the largest amusement park in Argentina. It opened in 1997 and has more than 50 mechanical games and shows for the whole family. It offers a catamaran tour around the Delta as well.
Being located between Coast Park (Parque de la Costa) and Fruit Port, it is one of the most modern casinos in Argentina; its 20,000m2 are distributed into three storyes, where you can find more than 60 tables to play roulette, blackjack, American baccarat, etc; there is a VIP room as well. You can enjoy a variety of musical shows and an exclusive restaurant. It is open every day.
Located on the traditional Paseo Victorica, it was originally created as a social centre where people could practice several sports and other recreational activities; there was also a casino until 1933. Settled by the Sarmiento river, this place used to be the house chosen by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento while staying in Delta. It was declared National Historic Monument and it currently operates as a museum and a library. The building is particularly protected by a huge glass to avoid deterioration. It remains open from Wednesday to Sunday and the entrance is free.
San Antonio de Areco
Weather:
Humid-template weather prevails, with average temperatures of 12ºC in winter and of 23ºC in summer. The seasons with the most showers are fall and winter.
How to get there:
From Buenos Aires: Panamericana Route, North Access and then Pilar branch up to km68, where the highway becomes National Route 8. Drive along this way up to km113, where you will find the access way to San Antonio de Areco city.
When to get there:
To go on a picnic-lunch in one of its traditional restaurants or stay and visit the picturesque village pulperías, San Antonio de Areco is visited throughout the year.
San Antonio de Areco is north Buenos Aires province, 113km from the capital city; it has an important gaucho (folklore) tradition, with picturesque houses and numerous old, local general stores which date back to the XIX Centrury. It was declared “Historic Town of National Interest” by the national administration.
A must in San Antonio de Areco
Created in 1937, it reproduces a ranch house by the end of XVIII and offers several rooms exhibiting the gaucho culture and the country traditions. Among the variety of historic objects you can see (typical furniture, old pictures and a guns collection), it is worth mentioning the manuscripts of the well-known writer Ricardo Güiraldes.
They are the taverns country people used to go mainly in the XIX Century, where alcoholic drinks were sold as well as food. They were built in stones or bricks, with metal bars separating the bartender (pulpero) from the customers. At present, San Antonio de Areco keeps many of those places, such as “Los Principios”, “La Blanqueada” and “La Esquina de Merti”.
Every November, this festival becomes one of the most popular celebrations in Argentina. The protagonist is the country cultural life: “guitarreadas” (guitar interpretation), traditional skills contests and horses parade. You can also enjoy a typical “asado criollo” or even buy excellent manmade products.
Martín García Island
Weather:
It has a wet, warm kind of weather with an average annual temperature of 17ºC. It rains 1,000mm per year approximately.
How to get there:
By ship: Boarding: Cacciola S.A.´s ships depart every Monday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and holiday morning from River Station in Tigre. The journey takes around 3 hours.
By light aircraft: from San Fernando aerodrome; the flight lasts around 20 minutes.
When to get there:
Whether by boat or by plane, the island can be visited throughout the year.
Being located in Río de la Plata river, 35km from Tigre port and 3.5km from Uruguay, this place has a large number of natural attractions, like jungles, sandy beaches, a lagoon and forests. The island is inhabited by more than 200 bird species (calandra lark, white and purple heron, zorzal and caracolero) and its soil is 1,800 million years old, one of the oldest in the Argentine territory. The island also offers different historic places, true witnesses of Argentine history; for example, the spots where four presidents were once confined. They were: Hipólito Yrigoyen, Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear, Juan Domingo Perón and Arturo Frondizi.

Lugares históricos

San Pedro can be accessed at any time of year, as its museums, hotels and restaurants riverine open their doors without interruption.
This city in the province of Buenos Aires, 164km northwest of the national capital city, on the right bank of the Paraná Guazú river is characterized by the tall and picturesque ravines, which offer an amazing panoramic view over
San Pedro lagoon and the Paraná river. The historical quarter has big, old houses built in a colonial style during the XIX Century. There are also several museums, such as the Paleontology Museum Fray Manuel Torres and the García Curten Museum House, which exhibits original masterpieces by the artist, made from leftovers.

Designed by the French architect and landscapist Carlos Thays, it is framed by plants and flowers.
