
They are succeeding in being one of the world´s 7 nature wonders. In the border between Argentina and Brazil, they are made of 275 drops that go as high as 70 mts.
Listed a natural heritage site by Unesco, this place is surrounded by land, fire, air, and water, lots of water, to the delight of thousands of tourists that gaze upon it every day and call it Iguazu Falls.
Around them, the land is unbelievably fertile. From the reddish earth, there rises a majestic, thick forest, the world´s largest subtropical river woodland reserve, the Iguazu National Park, covering 622,705 acres across two countries.
The absolutely pure, moist-filled air cleans the lungs of people living in large metropolises.
The Iguazu Falls, as their name says, are located close to the mouth of the Iguazu River, on the border between Brazil and Argentina, in the heart of South America. “Iguazú” is guaraní for “big water”. They are made of 275 drops that go as high as 70 mts. The famous Devil’s Throat allows one to get as close as 50 mts to the striking waterfall. It is a great opportunity for water adventures and gathers a large diversity of animals and vegetation.
The waters plunging from the falls spring up in Curitiba, at the foot of the Coastal Mountain Range (Serra do Mar), less than 100 km. from the South Atlantic Ocean, and flow 910 km. inland until they reach the Paraná River, 23 km. downstream from the Falls.
To visit them, tourists can leave from Foz de Iguaçú, in Brazil, Puerto Iguazú in Argentina, or even Ciudad del Este in Paraguay, the three vortices of the so-called three-nation area. The three cities have international airports capable of landing large aircrafts flying every day to and from Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Asunción, respectively. People can also drive or take a bus there, a trip made easy by good roads.
The waterfalls of the Iguazú river, one of the most splendorous natural beauties of Argentina. They are framed by a richly endowed subtropical jungle in the north of Misiones province and extend over a surface of 67,000 hectares.
Vote for the Iguazu Falls
After the successful call to select the new 7 Wonders of the World, the New7Wonders Foundation launched another original online voting campaign to choose the New 7 Wonders of Nature. On July 21st, the 28 fnalists were announced: the Iguazú Falls are among them.
The new call to vote for the 7 winners is open until 2011 . Registering in the Foundation´s website is the only necessary step to choose one of the 200 impressive natural sites.
According to the New7Wonders Foundation, the nominee selection criterion is based on a wide concept that includes breathtaking traditional landscapes as well as still relatively unknown nature sites. From waterfalls to fiords, from rainforests to mountain peaks, from fresh water lakes to salted plains, the goal is to discover the planet’s incredible beauty and diversity.
